The United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), composed of 54 Member States, elected Cuba on Monday 15, to occupy a seat, starting in January 2021, in the following subsidiary bodies: the Commission on Population and Development, the Executive Board of the UN Development Programme / UN Population Fund / UN Office for Project Services and the Committee for Programme and Coordination.
Cuba gained 52 votes out of 54 possible votes in all bodies.
Cuba could have been elected without a vote, since the number of candidates was equal to or less than the number of vacancies for the abovementioned bodies. However, the United States delegation decided to request a vote to these candidatures.
Despite US maneuvering, Cuba had the support of the overwhelming majority of ECOSOC members, which is a sign of the recognition that the Cuban diplomacy has in this UN main body.
Cuban president Miguel Diaz-Canel praised the example of Cuba and its diplomatic tradition, following the election of the country to occupy seats in subsidiary bodies of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
On his official Twitter account, the president stressed that the election was possible despite maneuvers by the United States government to avoid a favorable outcome for Cuba.
#Cuba is elected to fill seats in several bodies of the UN’s Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). The example and prestige of the nation rises and wins in the face of the empire’s maneuvers to prevent voting in our favor. #SomosCuba #SomosContinuidad pic.twitter.com/WI98Wkh9TZ
